Leaf Structure And Photosynthesis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
A process where planes use light, Carbon dioxide & water to produce glucose & oxygen
What organelle is responsible for photosynthesis?
The chloroplast
What pigment captures light energy for photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
Write the balanced equation for photosynthesis
6 Co2 + 6 H2o + light → C6H12O6 + 602
What is the main function of the palisade mesophyll?
It is the primary site of photosynthesis
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll?
Allows gas exchange though its air spaces
What are stomata?
Small pares on the underside of the leaf that allow gas exchange
What do guard cells do?
They open & close the stomata to regulate gas exchange & water loss
What does the xylem transport?
Water & minerals from the roots to the leaves
What does the phloem transport?
Sugars (glucose) from the leaves to other parts of the plant
Why are leaves flat & thin?
To increase surface area for light absorption & matte gas exchange more efficient
What is The function of the waxy cuticle?
Prevents water loss from the leaf
