Multicellular Organization Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a multicellular organism?
An organism made up of many cells that work together to carry out life processes
Why do multicellular organisms need specialized cells?
Because it’s more efficient for different cells to preform specific functions rather than one cell dong everything
What are the levels of biological organization from smallest to largest?
Cell → tissue → organs →organ system→ organism
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
What is an organ?
A structure made of different tissues working together to perform a body function
What is an organ system?
A groups of organs that work together to carry out major body functions
Give an example of a specialized plant cell & its function
Guard cells - control the opening & closing of stomata for gas exchange
What is the function of xylem in plants?
To transport water & minerals from roots to the rest of the plants
What is The function of phloem in plants?
To transport sugars (food) made during photosynthesis from the soil to other parts of the plant
Why does a single- celled organism become inefficient at larger sizes?
Because its surface area to volume ratio decreases, limiting material exchange
