Tropisms Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a tropism?
A plant’s growth response to an environmental stimulus
What plant hormone is responsible for tropisms?
Auxins
What is phototropism?
A plant’s response to light
What is positive phototropism?
Growth towards light (e.g. Stem bending towards a window )
What is negative phototropism?
Growth away from light (rare)
How does auxin cause phototropism?
Auxin collects on the shaded side, causing cells there to grow longer & bend the plant toward the light
What is gravitropism?
A plant’s response to gravity
What is positive gravitropism?
Growth with gravity - roots grow downward
What is negative gravitropism?
Growth against gravity - stems grow upward
What is thigmotropism ?
A plant’s response to touch
What is an example of thigmotropism?
Tendrils of a vine wrapping around a stick or wire
