Why?
Musolini owned land around it
It was rich in natural resources
They had defeated italy in 1896
Mussolini was confident the league wouldn’t do anything as they hadn’t at corfu or manchuria
And he knew the league would do anything to keep him as an ally
In 1935 the French met with musolini and made a top secret deal - the hoare laval pact
The league morally condemned musolini
Britain and france Failed to close the suez canal, even though it would stop musollinis troops

Why?
Japan had suffered badly in depression and needed new land with new resources to sell
It would upset Russia
There was an explosion on the manchurian railway( owned by japan) and they blamed Chinese bandits - Munden incident
League was reluctant to get involved as China was a long way away, Japan was a powerful member, many thought Japan was entitled to it
Lytton report concluded ro invasion wasn’t justified
Weaknesses of the league
Soviet Union( until 1934), germany( until 1926) and usa weren’t members
Had no army to enforce decisions
Assembly only met once per year
Decisions had to be unanimous
The 4 big country’s had a bigger say
