Lecture 1 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What was referred to as the ‘modal’ model of memory?
Atkinson and Shiffrin’s model (1968)
What are the two different types of sensory memory?
Echoic and iconic
Who came up with the term iconic memory and how long did he say it lasted for?
Sperling (1960) and 50ms
Sperling (1960)’s experiment for iconic memory involved what?
12 items, PPs are aware that there are 12 but can only recall 4/5, tone to signal a particular line –> much better. 0.5 sec delay –> improvement is lost
Who came up with the term echoic memory and how long did he say it lasted for?
Triesman, 1964, 2000ms
Magic number - quote and author.
the magic number 7, plus or minus 2 –> Miller (1957)
What limits our memory capacity?
The amount of chunks we can recall (Miller, 1956)
Two examples of the phonological similarity effect?
Baddeley (!966) and Conrad and Hull (1964)
Who was Patient KF?
1970 –> specific defciits for verbal information but intact memory for images –> suggested there may be more than one type of STM
Who was PAtient PV?
1984 – digit span of 2, ran a shop –> functions of retention and manipulation may be separable
What did Patient KF tell us about transfer from STM to LTM?
KF had few problems with LTM –> STM does not enter LTM in serial fashion through a unitary STM
What is thought of Atkinson and Shiffrin’s model now?
Oversimplified
Who came up with the replacement model for ATkinson and Shiffrin and when?
Baddeley and Hitch in 1974, episodic buffer introduced by Baddeley in 2000.
What did Triesman’s (1964) experiment consist of?
unattended message < 2s before attended message –> PPs recognise its the same
