Flashcards in LECTURE 1 cartilage (connective tissue type) Deck (12):
1

cartilage qualities

more abundant prenatally; firm, flexible, resists compression, durable; avascular (condrocytes can function with low oxygen); not innervated

2

cartilage cells (2)

chondroblasts, condrocytes

3

chondroblasts

produce cartilage

4

chondrocytes

mature cartilage cells (in lacunae)

5

cartilage fibers

all types have collagen fibers, elastic cartilage also has elastic fibers

6

endochondralossification

creation of bone from cartilage

7

lacunae

spaces in the matrix

8

perichondrium

dense irregular connective tissue around cartilage; function: growth/repair of cartilage (chondroblasts); resists expansion during compression of cartilage

9

types of cartilage (3)

hyaline, elastic, fibrocartilage

10

hyaline cartilage

most abundant; collagen fibers in matrix; support via flexibility/resilience; glossy in color/appearance; eg: at limb joints, ribs, nose, trachea, larynx

11

elastic cartilage

many elastic fibers in matrix with collagen; great flexibility; eg: external ear, epiglottis

12

fibrocartilage

collagen fibers densely interwoven; resists both compression and tension (super strength); eg: meniscus, annulus fibrosus
