Making assumptions and decisions based on inaccurate or faulty info and assumptions
Refers to Thoughts and Feelings
Prejudice
Set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices that are used to justify the belief that one racial category is somehow superior or inferior to others
Racism
Unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds on race, age, and sex
Refers to action
Discrimination
Oversimplified idea about a group of people, statement, action or incident
Stereotype
Oversimplified ideas about groups of people, a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of marginalized groups
Stereotype
Unearned access to resources (social power) only readily available some people as a result of their advantage social group membership
Privilege
Examples of privilege
Class, white, heterosexual, religious, able-bodied, citizenship
People who are restricted from resources (social power) that is readily available to some people
Non-privilege
Examples of non-privilege
Minorities
Racism that is built into the foundation of US society;
Influenced the development of social institutions, laws, beliefs, and practices
Systemic
Racism takes form in the way policies and laws are crafted and put into practice through societies institutions
Institutional
Example of institutional racism
War on drugs, which targets POC communities more often
This is the racism that occurs btw individuals
Interpersonal
This is racism that exists within individuals
Ex: xenophobia
Internalized
Statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group
IE: Backwards compliment
Microaggresion
“You speak like a white person.” What is this an example of?
Micro aggression
Ability to decide who will have access to resources; the capacity to direct or influence the behavior of others, oneself, and/or the course of events
Power
Why are social hierarchies still a thing
Bc power and privilege go hand in hand;
The people who are privileged give the power to themselves since they have the resources which in turn creates greater disparities and a social hierarchy
Racism expressed in how racial groups are represented within popular culture;
IE: POC cast as criminals, background characters
Representation racism
Racism that colors and manifests in those things. It refers to world views, beliefs, and common sense ideas that are rooted in racial stereotypes and biases.
IE: white and light skinned people are more intelligent; Latin women are fiery
Ideological racism
Racism expressed as racial slurs and hate speech, but also as a code words that have racialize meaning embedded in them, like “ghetto”
Discursive racism
What type of racism is this:
White women walking on sidewalk crosses to avoid passing closely by a black man.
Person of color is verbally or physically assaulted;
Neighbor calls the police to report a break-in bc they dont recognize their black neighbor; Hate crimes are most extreme manifestations of this racism
