the extension of state authority over the political & economic life of other territories (taking over)
colonialism vs imperialism
colonialism = establishment of a colony in a foreign land
imperialism = one country taking over another by force or persuasion (with no settlement)

The Theory: Mackinder argued that because the Heartland was landlocked and hard to invade, a powerful state that controlled it could dominate the surrounding areas and eventually the world.
