Lecture 21 and up Flashcards
What is a gamete?
A cell that fuses with another cell during fertilization in organisms that reproduce sexually.
what is a zygote?
The initial cell formed when two gamete cells are joined in sexual reproduction.
What is an autosomal gene?
A chromosome that is not an allosome (not a sex chromosome).
What is an allosome?
A sex chromosome.
What is homozygous?
An organism is referred to as being homozygous at a specific locus when it carries two identical copies of the gene affecting a given trait on the two corresponding homologous chromosomes
What is heterozygous?
An organism is a heterozygote or is heterozygous at a locus or gene when it has different alleles occupying the gene’s position in each of the homologous chromosomes. In other words, it describes an individual that has 2 different alleles for a trait.
