Lecture 21 - Non-Medelian Inheritance Flashcards

Q

what is epistasis? How does it work dominantly and recessively?

A

Epistats is the phenotypic expresson of one gene is affected by another gene

Recessive: a recessive allele of an epistatic gene suppresses the expression of the hypostatic gene when in a homozygous recessive state. (recessive phenotype over rules)

Dominant: the dominant allele of the epistatic gene masks the expression of all alleles of the hypostatic gene (dominant allele will code for a inhibitor of an enzyme, not allowing for other phenotypes to be expressed)

Q

How does sex determination work in humans?

A

There is a sex gene called SRY and if it is expresssed then it will intiate testicular developement meaning it will be male. If the gene is absent then the default female state will develop.
