Q

Ulysses’ Argument for the Armor

A
  • Argues that the only reason they have the armor is that he carried the body back with the armor
  • Says Ajax won’t be able to understand the images inscribed upon it and he wouldn’t appreciate the artistic nature of it.
  • Says that lineage doesn’t matter, and he’s related to the gods in the same way
  • Mentions that there are other heroes who are related in much the same way that are not staking a claim
  • Slander’s Ajax’s father Telemann who was kicked out of side for fratricide
  • Claims that this is a battle of merit not strength or who you’re related to
  • Persuades Agamemnon to focus on state matters which meant sacrificing his daughter for the sake of the army
  • Goes to Clytemnestra to persuade her to allow Iphigenia to go along
  • Kills king Rhesus and steals the chariot and that he volunteered for that
  • Ulysses manipulates the story and claims that everything Achilles accomplished was because he revealed that Achilles was hiding out as a girl and was then forced to go to war when he was revealed.
  • Prevented Greeks from retreating
  • Stole the Palladium: statue of Pallas Minerva which was said to give some magical power to the city to protect them
