Lecture 3 Flashcards
What are the five domains that make up the Five Factor Model and Big 5?
Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness
Structural differences between FFM and B5?
- FFM has hierarchy (domains and facets)
- B5 has no trait hierarchy
Differences in measurement between FFM and B5
FFM: Questions
B5: Adjectives
Causality
FFM: Traits ‘cause’ behaviour
B5: no causal claims
Origins
FFM: Biology
B5: Natural language
What did Costa and McCrae (1995) suggest when looking at FFM and Eysenck’s PEN model?
-Suggested that
Eysenck’s P is a conflation of C and A
- Is O a part of FFM or is it really part of intelligence domain?
What influence does shared environment have on traits?
(Hahn et al,2012): twin studies found that effect of shared environment is small, if not zero
What are some critiques of the FFM and B5?
- Block (1995): problems using factor analysis to determine, one personality, adjectives selected to fit model
- Eysenck (1992): some factors (A&C in particular) better seen as facets of N and P
- Digman (1997): B5 factors highly correlated, proposes two super factors alpha and beta
