physic determinism
all thoughts, emotions and behaviors are caused by prior (often unconscious) mental processes
drive theory
our lives are shaped by two fundamental biological divers:
1. life instinct (eros): drives toward survival, growth, reproduction and pleasure
2. death instinct (thanatos): drives towards aggression, self-destruction, and return to a lifeless state
id

defense mechanisms
when the ego struggles to balance the demands of the id and superego. Unconscious strategies that help reduce anxiety, guilt, or unpleasant emotions
repression
involves the unconscious blocking or “forgetting” of distressing thoughts, memories or feelings. Aims to protect the ego from overwhelming anxiety or guilt
denial
refusing to accept reality or facts to avoid emotional pain or destressing consequences
projection
attributing one’s own unacceptable thoughts, feelings, or motives onto another person
free association
psychoanalytic technique in which the patient is enourages to verbalize thoughts, feelings, and memories without censorship . Aims to bring unconscious material into awareness often linked to symptoms or relational patterns
adressing resistance
resistance = patient’s avoidance of stressing or unacceptable thoughts. Seen as sign that unconscious material is close to awareness
transference interpretation
patient projects feelings or expectations from early relationships onto the therapist
dream analysis
therapist and patient explore symbolic meanings of dream content to uncover repressed desires and conflicts
triangle of conflict
defenses, anxiety, feelings
triangle of person
therapist, current persons, past persons
core conflictual relationship theme (CCRT)
central pattern of theme is relationship with others, reflecting underlying conflicts. 3 components: wish, response from other, response from self
intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP)
treetment goal: experience and process unconscioius attachment-trauma-related emotions. Focus on triangle of conflict
pressure (ISTDP)
encourage patient recognize and focus on avoided emotions
challenge (ISTDP)
point out defense patient is using and help overcome it

attach on the entire defensive structure of patient. Explain consequences of maintaining defensive barriers, emphasizes patient’s role in either facilitator or hindering therapeutic process
supportive-expressive psychotherapy
combines elements of support and exploration. Supportive interventions aim to create strong therapeutic alliance. Expressive interventions aim to uncover unconscious conflict
