Lecture 6 Flashcards

1
Q

How does the modal model works?

A

Information goes to early analysis where it is send to the short term memory. If it is rehearsed, it will be send to the long term memory, where it will stay. If you want to retrieve this info it will go from LTM back to STM.

When it isn’t rehearsed, it will be lost.

Q

What is elaborative rehearsal?

A

thinking about the meaning of the information and connecting it to other information already stored in memory

Q

What is massed practice?

A

a learning procedure in which practice trials occur close together in time, either in a single lengthy session or in sessions separated by short intervals.

6
Q

Distributed practice

A

a learning procedure in which practice periods for a particular task are separated by lengthy rest periods or lengthy periods of practicing different activities or studying other material, rather than occurring close together in time.

A

The process of integrating new information into
stored information

8
Q

Intentional Learning

A

The participants are aware that
their memory is going to be tested and they intentionally try
to remember the materials

9
Q

Incidental learning

A

Participants are unaware that a
there will be a memory test. They learn without any
intention to learn

Q

What is proactive interference?

A

Older info prevents or interferes with the learning or retrieval of newer info

the tendency of previously learned material to hinder subsequent learning.

Q

What is retroactive interference?

A

new info interferes with the retrieval of old info

the tendency of later learning to hinder the memory of previously learned material.

16
Q

What is the capacity of ltm?

A

Unlimited

17
Q

How do we encode LTM?

A

Mostly semantic

18
Q

What is the duratuon of LTM?

A

Hours to life time

19
Q

How do we forget LTM?

A

Interference

20
Q

Synesthesia

A

a phenomenon in which a combined perception occurs.

experiences are elicited by sensory stimuli or cognitive concepts

Hearing music and seeing colors in your mind

21
Q

Categorization/clustering

A

If you can categorize the information in a way, there is a higher chance to remember it.

Milk, yogurt, cheese= milk products

22
Q

Peg-word systems

A

a memory aid that involves linking words with numbers

one-gun, two-shoe, three-tree, four-door, etc

23
Q

Method of loci

A

locations on a familiar route or rooms in a familiar building to arrange and recollect memorial content.

24
Q

Memory palace

A

Similiar to Loci. Imagine you are in a palace. In each room you store the info you need to remember.

25
Q

Mnemonic devices

(Ezelbruggetjes)

A

Mnemonic devices are memory techniques that systematically change difficult to remember material into more easily remembered material

26
Q

Network

A

Nodes+connections

27
Q

Memory search

A

Start with one node and travel via connections until the target node is found

28
Q

To activate the node, it depends on:

A
  • How much activation is received
  • How recently the activation is received
  • The number of previous activations
29
Q

Spreading activation

A

Once a node is activated, it activates other nodes automatically
