The B&O railroad, was carrying shipments from Balitmore to Ohio when, Jackson stopped the trains and stole all the merchandise, but the thing is that in fact ( Jackson was the watching the shipment day and night and asked president for a tour hour window because he had trouble sleeping.

  • Out ranks everybody except Scott. Never fought. Never led men in battle.

What does Mc Clellean returns to Us in 1856?

A

McClellan returns to the US in 1856. He writes a book of calvary tactics and develops a new type of saddle, which exerts less pressure on the horse. This type of saddle is used to this day. January 1857, McClellan resigns from the army and goes into private practice, becoming chief engineer of the Illinois Railroad. In 1860 he becomes President of the Ohio railroad. He is an active democrat as supports Lincoln’s rival, Douglass.

When was the first battle between the confederates and the Union forces?

A

The first Battle between the confederates and the Union forces was in the Town of Philippi. in West Virigina, in which it was triggered by a confederate sypathsizer. head to Philippi to war the Confederates. The union soldiers capture the run and pull him off his horse. This instigates Ms. Humphreys pulling out a handgun and firing into the Union soldiers. Hearing the gunshots, the Union soldiers open fire on Philippi. 24 Confederate and 4 Union casualties. This victory is claimed by McClellan. This leads to McClellan becoming a media sensation and called a Young Napoleon, despite being far away from the actual battle.

  • McClellan brings his army up
  • McClellan faces battle for the first time
  • He writes letters to his wife; on eve of battle, he says the he has suddenly realized the dreaful reality; lives of men, reputation of country, etc.
  • Gets ‘cold feet’; cannot move
  • Officer urge to move forward; is afraid

  • As facing Confederate Force at Rich Mountain is stunned in deliberation.

What is the battle of Rich mountain? Robert S Garnett Vs George MC Clellan?

  • Take union troops up the mountain, down the otherside, and flank the confederates from the rear
  • In the mean time, McClellan is to bring his troops further up the road closer to Camp Garnett
  • Throws confederates in the pincer
  • McClellan is reluctant that Rosecrans convinces him
  • First thing that goes wrong is that it rains
  • Sliding and slipping up the slope; slows movement
  • McClellan up by noon; waits for gun fire queue
  • 3pm (3 hours later); that Rosecrans comes off the mountain
  • McClellan hears gunfire and is confused why it is so late.
  • Confederates are firing artillery point blank; people in town hear the cannons fire 165 times; McClellan still does not move
  • Rosecrans destroys the guns but does not see McClellan anywhere; figures that confederates massacred McClellan
  • Once gunfire stops; thinks that Rosecrans is massacred
  • Confederates decide that they are outflanked; retreat; up same mountain as Rosecrans; pass each other 200 metres apart
  • Wake up, assuming lost the battle. Once union realizes what has taken place; they give chase; McClellan follows the Confederate trail (junk, etc.) for 2 days
  • Paper portrays McClellan as a leader

A

General Garnenete is shot by a Union Sniper, in which he became the first general to be killed in the war ( Confederates) - - Once again, McClellan sends telegrams about how he has thrashed the confederacy in West Virginia; killed a General; says to war office

  • Congress cannot even promote him anymore; short of Winfield Scott
  • Congress; President and Scott send personal congratulations on 3 victories in W. Virginia
  • 10 days later get first real battle in Manassas
  • Union thinks that they can win in 90 days bc of the outcomes

  • April 19th
  • 4 soldiers killed; 12 civies killed
  • Union troops try to get through
  • Lincoln not only has to deploy troops to the front, but behind him to secure telegraph lines, railways, etc. in Maryland
  • Without habeas corpas arrests Mayor of Baltimore, Chief of Police, etc.
  • Supreme court justice tells Lincoln that he cannot do it
    o Lincoln wanted to arrest him
    o Was not arrested
  • Maryland held in union because he takes a dictatorial free hand and throws people in prison that even talk of session
  • Hardcore secessionist will be held in prison for a year and a half
  • Later becomes more secure
