Lecture 7 - Cell transport A Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is diffusion?
molecules move from more concentration to low concentration, to form equilibrium.
What is osmosis?
water move from more molecule to less because of semi permeable membrane
What does isotonic environment mean?
iso = same
meaning the concentration outside the cell = inside the cell
Is an isotonic environment good for animal cells or plant cells
It is normal for animal cells but bad for plants
What do isotonic environments cause in plants?
Cause them to wilt
What is a hypotonic environment?
Hypo = Low
Solute concentration inside the cell is greater than outside the cell.
Is a hypotonic environment good for animal cells or plant cells
It is bad for animal cells but normal for plant cells.
What do hypotonic environments cause in animal cells?
Lysing. They burst.
What is a hypertonic environment?
Hyper = Elevated
Bad for all cells
What do hypertonic environments cause in cells?
Animal cells shrivel and Plant cells plasmolyze
How do gasses enter cells?
By diffusion through the phospholipid membrane.
Are steroid hormones hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Hydrophobic
