What is the first reading

A

The first stage of a bills passage through the House of Commons. It takes place without debate and the long title will be read out

What is the second reading

A

The first opportunities for MP’s to debate on the principles of the bill
The opposition debated on the bill and give their opinions
At the end of the debate the House of Commons decides whether the bill should be given its second reading by voting, meaning it can progress to the next stage

What id the committee stage

A

Where a detailed examination of the bill takes pace
Amendment are selected for discussion
Every clause in the bill is agreed to , changed or removed from the bill

A

Gives mp’s the opportunity to consider further amendments to a billl which has been examined in the committee

What is the third reading

A

The final chance for the commons to debate the contents of the bill. It usually takes place immediately after the report stage

What is the other house stage

A

The bill will then go to the House of Lords where it will go through the same procedure. The language in the bill must be agreed to by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It will go through the houses until the agreement which is known as Parliamentary ping pong

What is the royal assent stage

A

Where a bill has completed all parliamentary stages in both houses it must have the royal assent. The royal assent is the monarchs agreement to smoke the bill into an act and is a formality
