Georgian Com vs Stalin incident

A

• dissident Georgian communists who support Georgian autonomy as a republic of the USSR and not as transcaucasia = Still sad

– Not want to look like Com disagree with Com to outside world:

• Stalin who is the commissar for National minorities orders Ordjonikidze (His Georgian rep) to = Georgian communists under control

but Ordj ends up literally beating their leaders

Stalin for some reason defends this

Lenin says × stalin as = ▲ Georgian discontent w/ Bol + possibly ▲ discontent w/ them in rest of USSR

Georgia remains part of Transcaucasia

Jews under Lenin

A

Many Jews joined the SRs, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks.

• For example, Leon Trotksy and Martov were both Jews.

• Aug1919, Jewish property was seized

• Jews were prohibited from religious expression like other religious groups
– but was some tolerance eg in 1930 in Minsk, = 547 functioning synagogues.
– Yiddish was spoken at Communist Party meetings in that city in 1930s.

• Pogroms against the Jews were common during the Russian Civil War

• Lenin was opposed to these anti-semitic attacks, = they were distraction from the real enemies of the workers “the capitalists in all countries”.

• Jews allowed to leave the Pale of Settlement and many did so,
go to Russia’s industrial cities for work.
