*Nonphysical models: carbon dioxide inhalation and barbiturate overdose rely on drugs that cause loss of consciousness (most preferred)

*Physical methods: Sedation or anesthesia

*Physical methods alone: exsanguination, decapitation, or cervical dislocation on a conscious animal without sedation or anesthesia.

Why shouldn’t other animals be present during euthanization?

Vocalization and release of pheromones can occur during euthanasia that may induce anxiety in other animals. Chambers should be cleaned between uses.

How long should you verify that there is no respiratory movement after euthanization?
