Lesson 2 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is the nucleus of a cell?
Is largest organelle of the eukaryotic cell which controls most cell processes and contains genetic information for protein synthesis
What is the nuclear envelope?
Double membrane allowing the transport of mRNA and ribosomes out of the nucleus
What is the nucleoplasm?
Contains chromatin (DNA bound to Justine protein)
What is the nucleolus?
Spherical body inside the nucleus which synthesises mRNA
What is the purpose of the mitochondria?
Release ATP energy during aerobic respiratiin
Describe features of the mitochondria
• Double membrane filled with fluid in the inter membrane space
• Cristae - Inner membrane that is folded to increase SA
• Matrix - Substance inside membrane containing enzymes and 70s ribosomes
• Circular DNA
Why can large numbers of mitochondria be found in the muscles?
High demand for energy for continuous contractions
