Lesson 3 Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Site of photosynthesis
What is the stroma?
Colourless gel-like substance containing 70s ribosomes, circular DNA, lipids and starch grains
What are thykaloids and grana?
Thykaloids are flattened sacs which stack together to form grana and these connected by lamellae
Describe similarities between chloroplasts and mitochondria
• Have own DNA
• Have ability to generate metabolic energy
• Have 70s ribosomes
Explain how mitochondria and chloroplasts may have evolved from archaic prokaryotes and microbes
Endosymbiosis theory suggests that they were once cells which were engulfed by larger cells, then forming endosymbiotic relationship with each other, forming mitochondria/chloroplasts.
