Lesson 4 Flashcards
(8 cards)
What do ribosomes do?
They synthesise proteins by reading code on mRNA in cytoplasm (translation)
Describe structure of a ribosome
Made of large and small subunits which are made of mRNA and proteins
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
A network of flattened membrane sacs (cisternae) that is connected to the nuclear envelope
What is the function of RER?
Carries out protein synthesis and transport of proteisn
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Focuses on the building and transport of lipids and is associated with cells containing lots of carbohydrates, fats or proteins and those dedicated to secretion such as the liver
What is the Golgi body?
Network of interconnected flattened sacs
Name the 3 main functions of the Golgi body
• Modifying and packaging of proteins
• Producing glycoproteins
• Forming lysosomes
What are lysosomes and what do they do?
Single-membrane sacs which have digestive enzymes which are used for the breaking down of old cel parts or engulfed materials such as bacteria
