Paternalism
A policy where the Europeans governed people in a parental way by providing for their needs, but not giving them their rights

Indirect control is when Europeans let local rulers stay and help govern and direct control is when europeans ruled everything themselves and gave no power to locals

Negative results
- africans lost their land and freedom
*africans had leave their families to find jobs - people lost their homes and their land
- African traditions and culture were broken
- European disrespected African culture and made people confused about their identity
- many africans died from fighting back from the new sickness like small pox
