Classes of crimes:
Crimes against the person
Acts that either cause harm to another individual or pose a threat of harm to them
Classes of crimes:
Crimes against property
Criminal acts that employ force or deceit to acquire, damage or demolish property
Classes of crimes:
Cybercrime
Criminal activities aimed at computer systems such as introducing viruses as well as those involving computer networks such as email scams or internet based fraud
Classes of crimes:
Hate Crime
Acts of violence that stem from prejudice against a persons gender, disability, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation are known as hate crimes

Organized Crime
Criminal activity that is carried out in a systematic and premeditated manner by organized groups is known as organized crime
Classes of crimes:
White-collar Crime
Refers to non-violent crimes that are driven by financial motives, these include fraud, pyramid schemes and embezzlement
Categories of Crimes:
Summary Offences
- Criminal offences considered less serious in nature
Legislation: Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic) + Road Safety Act 1986 (Vic)
Features: - Less serious in nature
- Heard via hearings (as opposed to trials) in the Magistrates court
- No committal proceedings
- No jury
Categories of Crimes:
Indictable Offences
- Criminal offences considered more serious in nature than summary offences
Legislation: Victorian Crimes Act 1958 (Vic) + other acts + Common Law
Features: - More serious in nature
- Heard via trials in the County and Supreme Court
- Committal Proceedings
- Jury of 12 during Trial
