Digestion definition
The process by which your body breaks down food into small nutrient molecules
Define nutrients
The substances in food that provide the raw materials the body’s cells need to carry out all their essential processes
Name each nutrient
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water
Define carbohydrates
An energy rich organic compound like a sugar or starch that is made of the elements carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen
Define simple carbohydrates
They have Smaller molecules and taste sweet. They are burned quickly
Define complex carbohydrates
They have larger molecules, are high in fiber and nutrients
Define proteins
Smaller components called amino acids
Define fats
A concentrated energy source that can also be put into long term energy storage
Define saturated fats
Come from animal products and are solid at room temperature
Define unsaturated fats
Come from plant products and are oils. Liquid at room temperature
Define vitamins
Nutrients that help your body with chemical reactions
What vitamins can your body make
D and k
Name the two types of vitamins
Fat-soluble and water-soluble
Name fat-soluble vitamins
A and k
How are a and k stored
In fatty tissue and released when needed
Name water soluble vitamins
C
Where is vitamin c found
Citrus
Define minerals
Nutrients that aren’t made by the body but are needed to carry out chemical processes
Name some minerals
Calcium for bones and iron for blood
What is water
The most important nutrient
How long can you survive without water
Not long
Define peristalsis
Waves of smooth muscle contractions that move food through the esophagus towards the stomacb
