Lesson 5 Conjunctions Flashcards
(5 cards)
Subordinating conjunctions
Used to combine two independent clauses (complete sentences). The phrase that contains the subordinating conjunction is called the subordinate clause. The word order for the subordinate clause changes—the verb is subordinated (moved) to the end of the clause. There is always a comma between the two clauses.
Coordinating Conjunctions
They are used to link two independent clauses (complete sentences in their own right) together. A comma is used to separate the two clauses, and the normal word order is used in both phrases—the verb remains in the second position in both sentences.
Sentence Order
You can also begin a sentence with the subordinate clause. When you do this, the word order for the subordinate clause is exactly like it is when the phrase comes second. The main phrase, however, begins with the verb followed by the subject.
