Significance of Liberal Reforms

A
  • Stepping stone to a government-funded welfare state.
  • Lloyd George launched “People’s Budget” - (free healthcare and meals in school, old age pensions etc.)
  • 1911 National Insurance Act - health care for all workers who contributed to it.
  • Supported by some as a vital safety met for the poor.

Insignificance of Liberal Reforms

A
  • Still wasn’t free and those who weren’t working were not involved (incl. women and children)
  • Expensive - ordinary and rich people had to contribute to it
  • Some (mostly wealthy) didn’t like government meddling with people’s lives and saw it as an overreach of government power.
