Before the NHS
A
- 1942 Beveridge Report recommended government should care for people from “cradle to the grave”.
- Labour Party was elected, promising to enact many recommendations in the report and began the NHS (1945).

Significance of NHS
A
- Improved National Insurance Act and brought in welfare state (e.g. cheap or free meals for babies and children in school, free healthcare for adults and doles for the unemployed, special homes and home help for the elderly).
- Included expensive and cutting edge technology and equipment for treatment and diagnosis (e.g. scans, monitors, electron microscopes, endoscopes and radiology).
- Celebrated by many and seen as an appreciation for war-efforts.

Insignificance of NHS
A
- BMA worried that doctors would lose invome by become NHS doctors.
- Many didn’t like the governments inclusion in people’s lives and the costs.
- Voluntary hospitals and local authorities would lose power and be taken over.
