definitions (27 cards)
co-articulation
the adjustment of articulation of a segment due to the influence of a neighboring sounds
monophthongs
simple vowels, composed of a single configuration of the vocal tract
suprasegmentals
a phonetic characteristic of speech sounds, such as length, intonation, tone,or stress that rides on top of segment features. Must usualy be identified by comparison to the same feature on other sounds or strings of sounds
constants
speech sound produced with a constriction somewhere in the vocal tract that impedes air flow
vowels
speech sound produced with at most only a slight narrowing somewhere in the vocal tract, allowing air to flow freely through the oral cavity
monosyllabic
consisting of only one syllable
nucleus
the core element of a syllable, carrying stress, length, and pitch tone. It usually consists of a vowel or a syllabic constant
coda
in a syllable any consonant that occur in the rhyme after the nucleus
phonetics
the study of the minimal units of language the sounds of the spoken language
articulatory phonetics
subfield of phonetics concerned with the production of speech sounds
acoustic phonetics
subfield of phonetics that is concerned with the physical characteristics of the sounds of speech
auditory phonetics
subfield of phonetics concerned with the perception of speech sounds
sound spectograph
equipment that generates spectrograms from speech input
running speech
the usual form of spoken language, with all the words and phrases run together, without pauses in between them. Sometimes called continuous speech
productivity
refers to a languages capacity for novel messages to be built up out of discrete units
articulation
the motion or positioning of some part of the vocal tract (often, not always a muscular part such as the tongue or lips)with respect to some other surface of the vocal tract in the production of a speech sound.
articulatory description
for an auditory vocal language, the description of the motion or positioning of the parts of the vocal tract that are responsible for the production of a speech sound
glottis
the space between the vocal folds
displacement
ability of a language to communicate about things, actions, and ideas that are not present in space or time while speakers are communicating
place of articulation
describing where in the vocal tract the constriction is made
bilabial
constants made by bringing both lips close together
labiodental
constants are made with the lower lip against the upper front teeth
interdentals
are made with the tip of the tongue protruding between the front teeth
alveolar
sounds are made wit the tongue tip at or near the front of the upper alveolar
