Lipid Metabolism Flashcards
(16 cards)
Describe the basics of elongation?
Starts with acetyl-coA and acyl-coA ends in Acyl-coA. Adds 2C each round
Give the basics of fatty acids biosynthesis?
Acetyl-coA and malonyl-coA start, then all acp and ends with palmitate
Describe the basics of fatty acid oxidation?
Starts with a fatty acid then makes acyl-coA which then goes to acyl-coA and acetyl-coA.
Trans, 3-L, ß
What is the opposite of fatty acid oxidation?
Elongation
What does the acetyl-coA from oxidation do?
Enters TCA cycle or ketogenesis and forms ketone bodies
Briefly describe triacylglycerol synthesis?
DHAP can take two routes to lysophosphatidic acid which then goes to phosphatidic acid which makes diacyl the triacylglycerol
How does peroxisomal oxidation differ to mitochondrial?
P- long and branched, in plants entirely, requires 3 enzymes: acyl oxidase, enoyl-coA hydratase and thiolase.
How are phosphatidyl a) choline b) ethanolamine c) Serine d) linosterol and glycerol?
A) add phosphate and glycerol to choline
B) add phosphate and glycerol to ethanol amine
C) transfer Serine into phosphitidylethanolamine
D) use phosphatidic acid and add amino acid
Describe cholesterol synthesis?
Two acetates, form acetoacteyl-coA then HMG-coA. Mevalonate, steps to squalene to oxidosqualene, protosterol cation then lanosterol 19steps to cholesterol
What can you make from Arginine?
NO
What order are:
Adrenalin, L-DOPA, dopamine, noradrenaline made from tyrosine?
L-DOPA, dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline
What’s the similarity and difference between pancreatic lipase and phospholipase A?
Both are activated by lipid-water interfacial activation, both have hydrophobic channels near to active site, but only pancreatic lipase requires a conformational change
What do chylomicrons transport?
Dietary lipids to tissues
What do both VLDL and ILDL transport?
Endogenously synthesised lipids to tissues
Which lipoprotein takes cholesterol to tissues?
LDL
What roles does cholesterol have?
Membrane, vitD, hormones, bile acids
