Viruses Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the two types of capsids?
Non enveloped (simple) and enveloped (complex)
What are the four common features of viruses?
Self vs host recognition, uses hosts for survival, host-virus battles, protected genome by a capsid
How can enveloped capsids be complex?
Have lipid bilayers, glycoprotein and matrix or tegument
What are capsid proteins?
Usually highly basic positively charged and rich in arg and lys which can self assemble
What are the two types of basic containers?
Isohedral and helical
Give and example of an Isohedral virus?
Human rhinovirus and MS2
In Isohedral viruses what type is a) 60 subunits and b) 180 subunits?
A) t=1
B) t=3
What does a greater number of subunits allow?
More of the genome to encode for useful stuff
