Lipids Flashcards
Functions (6 cards)
What are building blocks called?
Glycerol or fatty acids
What is each lipid made up of?
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids
Functions of lipids
Store energy Provide insulation against cold Provide waterproof Protect organs Absorb nutrients Provide structure
What are the 3 types of lipids
Polyunsaturated
Saturated
Unsaturated
Describe the tree types of lipids
Saturated-most common in animals
Solid at room temperature
Called fats
Have lots of hydrogen atoms
Unsaturated-have one hydrogen atom less in each molecule
Common in plants
Liquid at room temperature
Called oils
Polyunsaturated-have several hydrogen atoms less in each molecule
Also called oils
What are the health risks of lipids
Saturated fatty acids cause an increase of a fatty substance called cholesterol on blood
Cholesterol is needed in our bodies but excess will cause a layer of fatty material in our arteries
Atherosclerosis-narrowing of the arteries by a fatty material
