Q

Describe the tree types of lipids

A

Saturated-most common in animals
Solid at room temperature
Called fats
Have lots of hydrogen atoms

Unsaturated-have one hydrogen atom less in each molecule
Common in plants
Liquid at room temperature
Called oils

Polyunsaturated-have several hydrogen atoms less in each molecule
Also called oils

Q

What are the health risks of lipids

A

Saturated fatty acids cause an increase of a fatty substance called cholesterol on blood
Cholesterol is needed in our bodies but excess will cause a layer of fatty material in our arteries
Atherosclerosis-narrowing of the arteries by a fatty material
