Organic Compounds(carbohydrates) Flashcards
Functions (5 cards)
What is an organic compound
A chemical compound that contains a carbon and I’d produced by living organisms. Compounds containing a carbon with oxygen and hydrogen attached to it
What are the building blocks of a carbohydrate called?
Saccharides
What is the importance of carbohydrates
They are an energy source
The store energy: in plants as starch and in animals as glycogen
Provide structure and protection
What are the three types of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharide,Disaccharideand Polysaccharide
Differences between the three carbohydrates?
Monosaccharide: Has 1 sugar unit
Dissolves in cold water
Examples:glucose,fructose,galactose
Dissaccharide:Has 2 sugar units Dissolves in hot water Examples:sucrose-table sugar maltose-malt sugar Lactose-milk sugar
Polysaccharide:Has many sugar units
Doesn’t dissolve in water
Examples:starch,glycogen,cellulose
