What is listening?
• A skill which involves receptive activity
• A conscious, purposeful and active procedure that is meant to be practised and developed
• Paying attention and making a conscious effort to process what you hear
• Is both physical(hear sounds) and perceptual (make sense of sounds heard)
Background listening
listening is not the primary task you are focusing on.
Passive listening
listener acts passively by receiving the message only without giving further external indications; listen without reacting
Narrow listening
refers to listening to a single segment several times for the purpose of meaning ( the focus of the listening activity is getting information).
Sporadic listening
Listener tune in and out, sometimes being aware but mostly distracted.
Active listening
listening with a purpose.
Critical listening
listening to evaluate and either accept or reject the information.
Empathetic listening
Listening as a means of emotional support
Empathic listening
Attempting to understand the perspective of the other person as you listen.
Comprehensive listening
– INVOLVES LISTENING TO UNDERSTAND A MESSAGE FROM A SPEAKER.
– MOST COMMON FORM
– BASIC PRECONDITION FOR ALL THE OTHER TYPES
PSEUDOLISTENING
TO PRETEND TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE WITHOUT
ACTUALLY DOING THE WORK OF PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT THE PERSON IS SAYING
