Decoding
Giving feedback
Conceptualising
Begins with an idea that someone wants to convey.
This is the conceptualisation phase.
Encoding
The idea must be encoded or given a format in words, pictures, or actions.
Selecting the medium/channel
What method?
Which device will transmit the information?
The type of message
The number of receivers
The immediacy of the anticipated response
Decoding
Using past experience, language, perceptions, opinions and any other clues to decipher the message sent and interpret the meaning.
Giving feedback
The receiver responds to the message and this response can be positive or negative.
Barriers to communication
Whenever the understanding of a message is affected, the obstruction is considered a barrier to communication.
Barriers to communication are otherwise known as noise.
Define ‘noise’
▪ Noise is anything that interrupts or blocks the flow of information during the communication process.
▪ Noise is anything that detracts from the message sent and prevents effective communication.
▪Noise is any interference with clear transmission and reception of a message during the process of communication.
Noise regarding the sender
SENDER- Internal Noise–Psychological Noise/Physiological Noise
Internal noise are distractions that stem from receiver’s
mindset, attitude or disposition)
▪Sender’s attitude/state of mind
▪Prejudices
Noise regarding the receiver.
RECEIVER- (Internal noise–Psychological/ Physiological)
▪Receiver’s attitudes/state of mind
▪Background and the experiences that affect the decoding process
Semantic noise
The source’s choice and organization of language.
External noise
Distractions that stem from outside of the participants most often found along the channels of communication.
Facilitators of communication
These aid the passing of information and therefore
facilitate a mutual understanding
Effective communication
the sender and receiver both understand the message IN THE SAME WAY
Ineffective communication
The sender’s intention may not be what the receiver
understands. This is due to misunderstanding caused by emotional and social sources of noise.
