Flashback
A scene in a book, movie, or story that occurs before the current scene.
All of a sudden, Jimmy saw himself twenty years ago.
Dialogue
Talking by a character in the story.
“I think we should go left.” said Bill.
“Ok, sounds good.” replied Paul
Point of View
The perspective the story is told from.
- First Person: The story is told from the viewpoint of a character using “I” and “me”.
- Second Person: The story addresses the reader directly using “you”.
- Third Person Limited: The story is told from the perspective of a single character, using “he,” “she,” or “they,” and the narrator knows only their thoughts and feelings.
- Third Person Omniscient: The story is told from a god-like perspective, where the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all characters.
- Third Person Objective: The story is told as an objective observer, reporting on events and actions without revealing character thoughts.
Tone
The general additude of a piece of writing.
For example, a piece could be gloomy, or bright.
Theme
A reccuring idea in a piece of writing.
For example: love, loss, betrayal, happiness.
Irony
The use of language that typically signifies the opposite, for humorous effect.
I think that’s a great idea.
Conflict
A disagreement or argument.
Jane and Rick were in a conflict about what dog they should adopt.
Resolution
The solution to a conflict.
Jane and Rick adopted two dogs!
Inference
Making an assumption based on evidence.
If someone slams a door, you can infer they are upset.
