A comparison of two unrelated things; does not use connecting words
Metaphor
This poem can have any number of lines. The first letter of each line spells a word. Each line is related to the word.
Acrostic
Visually descriptive language that paints a picture in the readers mind; a type of sensory language
Imagery
A comparison of two unrelated things; uses the connecting words “like” or “as”
Simile
This poem consists of two lines that express a complete thought. Both line have a similar rhythm and the end words rhyme.
Rhyming couplet
Adjectives and/or figurative language used to vividly describe something; words the evoke the five senses
Sensory Words
A deliberate exaggeration used to emphasize a point
Hyperbole
A group of lines in a poem.
Stanza
A group of words arranged into a row
Lines
This poem is a 3-line poem that does not rhyme. There are a set number of words in each line. The lines form one stanza.
Collom Lune
This poem is a 7-line poem that uses specific parts of speech to describe a topic. It forms the shape of a diamond.
Synonym Diamante
A common saying whose meaning cannot be understood from the saying
Idiom
Giving human qualities to a nonliving thing.
Personification
This poem does not follow any patterns or rules. The focus is on the message, beauty, and/or sound of the words.
Free Verse
When words have the same ending sound.
Rhyme
The physical structure of a poem; the pattern or formula
Format
Sound device- the repeating of the same beginning sound in a group of words.
Alliteration
A single, unbroken sound of a word that usually contains a vowel sometimes consonants.
Syllable
The beat that is created by the use of short and long vowels in words and the number of syllables in each line.
Rhythm
Sound device- words that imitate real sounds.
