Discrimination [can occur on 8]
Develops from uninformed attitudes and beliefs that result in unfair treatment of certain individuals or groups. Discrimination can occur on someones;
-Race
-Culture
-Disability
-Social Class
-Age
-Gender
-Sexual orientation
-Religion
Types of Discrimination
Direct- Intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on differences.
Indirect- Policy practice or rule that applies to everyone, but only has a detrimental effect on some - ie male applicants must be clean shaven - affects those whose religious beliefs prevent them from doing this.
Examples;
Prejudice- Negative attitude towards or an unfair dislike of an individual or group.
Labelling- Identify people negatively as part of a group ‘’all travellers are thief’s’’
Stereotyping- Making judgements about groups of people based on prejudices - unfair assumption that all characteristics are the same- girls better behaved than boys.
Bullying
Impacts of discrimination on service users.
-Disempowerment (lack of control)
-Low self esteem
-Poor health and wellbeing - Physical injuries/ bruising / cuts.
-Unfair treatment - may not reach potential as not given support needed.
-Effects on mental health- depression/ anxiety/ eating disorders/ self harming/ socially isolated.
Types of Abuse [5]
Abuse refers to a wide range of negative and harmful ways of behaving.
-Physical Abuse- This is where someone causes pain or threatens to hurt an individual, for example holding a child roughly when changing a nappy. This often results in bruising, cuts and bleeding.
-Verbal Abuse- Name calling, insults or swearing to try and humiliate someone or reduce their dignity. For example a care assistant using foul language or raising her voice because a resident is taking too long to finish her meal.
-Psychological [Emotional] Abuse- Threats and constant criticism are examples of psychological abuse. The aim is to undermine and control the person being abused.
-Sexual Abuse- This would include any type of unwanted sexual contact.
-Neglect- this is where the carer fails to care for someone properly. Their basic need for warmth, food , clean clothing are not met.
