Q

Behind the Veneer (INTENT).

A

Behind the veneer, created in 2010, directed by Cadi McCarthy is a piece that allows viewers to convey an emotional snapshot of what everyday people in society deal with. McCarthy believes that society goes out of their way to vary their masks in order to deal with different situations as a result of bullying, insecurities, stereotypes and facades. She believes everyone can at least relate to one of these vignettes and connect with the idea in a more literal sense.

Q

Analyse how the choreography and design concepts have been used in the dance work to represent ideas and experiences related to youth #1 (set).

A

Sets are evident.

White graffiti, inscribed in ghost-like text on the brick wall at the back of the stage (shy, physical force, intense and ‘be assertive’).

After the ostracised scene, when Laura was trying to gain unison with the group - she was given no acknowledgement.

She then began drawing on the set and wrote the phrase, ‘be assertive’ meaning to show confidence to try gain acceptance for the next time she sees them - telling herself she can do it.

This is an abstract representation of a situation that can occur in school, the workplace, or in friendship groups - where one person is singled out from the group and appears to no longer fit in.

Q

Comment on how the dance work resonated with audiences and the significance of the dance work for the dance company.

A
  • Talks about real life issues - anxieties, insecurities.
  • People feeling the only way they can function within this world of critics, is to vary the masks in order to function in different situations.
  • People try to fit in with others by changing their appearance due to the fact they don’t feel comfortable in their own skin or their not accepted.
  • People may gain better lifestyles from viewing this, like people in relationships trying to make themselves better for one another.
  • People who have been in situations where they put others down for the way they look; may adapt to a new way of life where they are more kind and caring after seeing the hardship people deal with BTV.
  • Behind the Veneer also teaches people it’s okay to be yourself and you shouldn’t need to hide behind a veneer.

Q

Analyse how the choreography and design concepts have been used in the dance work to represent ideas and experiences related to youth #2 (prop - Venetian blinds).

A

Used throughout the entire performance.
Put on the stage in different configurations (symbolising the open and closed emotions of the performers).
Be selfs behind of veneer, in front however - depending on the particular group or situation they are in.

James is repeatedly (reoccurring motif) seen thrusting Hayley through venetians blinds and is seen spatially higher than her when he puts a table over her, leaving her in a dangerous situation, reinforcing his dominance.

The movement is rigid and percussive when they are fighting.

An example vignette of the venetian blinds within the production was the “Cycle of violence” scene which was considered a motif as Jake and Hayley are seen, both arguing again. The veneers are put out again to reinforce Hayley’s isolation and lack of identity as James threatens her again, within the veneers. Jake was seen to be bullied early in the performance by Peter, however now has become the persecutor. The movement between the two of them is rigid and percussive. James uses props to manipulate Hayley, he thrusts her through veneers and then puts a chair over her, sitting above her personifying that he has power domineering Hayley who is less able to defend herself. Many people can relate to relate to stories of domestic violence and allows viewers to further connect with this section in a more literal sense.

Q

Analyse how the choreography and design concepts have been used in the dance work to represent ideas and experiences related to youth #3 (music).

A

Matched the moods of all performers depending on the scene.
In the awkwardness scene, the song “Touch me Tiger” tied well with the idea behind this section (confident facade and the nervous reality). The song has two strong sides to it, being very confident and psyching yourself up to talk to your crush (movement is lustful, suspended) “Tiger, tiger I wanna squeeze you, all my love I will give to you” however, when it comes to actually speaking to them, you can barley string a sentence.
