Look the other way (INTENT)
Cadi McCarthy.
Provocative work that is centred on the issues affecting young immigrants in Australia.
Describes how people were forced to leave their home due to danger or political instability and become refugees.
They express their journeys and what it was like trying to now try fit into the Australian culture.
Their fear is their encouragement to find a safer place to live to give them more freedom.
Wooden planks - choreographic devices and elements of dance.

Rocking gently side to side
Dancers begin dancing in unison, then they slowly began to form a canon with one another
The movement is seen to quite rigid and percussive, representing the tough and dangerous journey the immigrants had to take in order to gain a better lifestyle.
They come across stone-faced, no expression
Wooden planks come in toward the middle of the performance, there they are positioned in a straight line - using reversal movements, which could represent the boat drifting back and forth in the ocean
They make a whacking sound - representing the journey the immigrants took on the boats
Second World War (middle-end).
Prime ministers speech (multimedia).
John Curtin - discussing how Japan bombed Darwin (1942) which killed approx 250 people.
Dancers perform as if they’re in a fight scene (solider-like movements in unison -> representing determination to fight the enemy who was attacking their country and the innocent lives in it).
Movements involved sharp kicks, slicing and fist punching.
Eventually the movement slows down and becomes softer - representing the war being put at rest.
End of the performance, with immigrants
Performance ends pleasantly, compared to the dramatic stories of immigrants and their journeys to Australia
Australian dancers dance with immigrants, they are shown break dancing and playing sports including soccer
The female dancers make their way on stage and link arms with the immigrants as a symbol of acceptance in relation to Australia’s diversity
Relevance to youth dance
Encourage young people to be creative and inspire others through various forms of dance styles.
Encourage them to drive cultural change, be creative and develop their physical technique, self-discipline and critical thinking
Can dance about suicide, bullying and protecting the world environment
Or culture, freedom, love and friendship
