What is the human genome project? How is it beneficial? How can it be controversial?
Human Genome Project (HGP) is a major scientific research project that was aimed to map and understand all genes in the human body. (1990-2003)
Ex:
-personalized medicine
-research tool
-medical advances
What are 3 techniques used in genetics today? How are they used?
Gene Editing: treating genetic disorders, improving crops and researching diseases
Gene Therapy: cure inherited diseases for cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy
DNA Testing: Identify genetic conditions and risks before birth
What is cloning? How is it used on humans?
Exact genetic copy of a living organism. (Transfer DNA from a body cell—>empty egg cell—>create an embryo with genetic info)
Who is Charles Darwin? What did he do?
An English naturalist created the evolution of natural selection.
(How species evolve overtime)
What are the 5 main points of Darwin’s theory of natural selection?
Variation
Struggle for existence
Survival of the fittest
Speciation
Overproduction
What are the 3 main types of adaptations?
Structural
Physiological
Behavioural
Elaborate on the factors that reproductive isolation can result from
Geographical isolation
Behavioural isolation
Temporal isolation
What are the differences between complete dominance, incomplete dominance and Codominance
Complete dominance: allele hides the other and only dominant is seen.
Incomplete dominance: neither is fully dominant, trait blends to make a trait.
Co dominance: both alleles are strong, both are shown side by side
