How did Macbeth show loyalty and betrayal ?
Loyalty :
- To duncan for winning and showing bravery at war
Betrayal:
- Killed Duncan
- Killed Banquo and tried to kill fleance
- Killed Macduff’s family
How does Lady Macbeth show loyalty and betrayal ?
Loyalty : she stays loyal to her husband and even when they grew distant, during her sleepwalking tried to comfort him “ wash you hand put on your night gown” “Banquo’s dead; he cannot come out on’s grave”
Betrayal : convinced Macbeth to murder her king “ Screw your courage to the sticking place” “Had he not resembled my father as he slept , i had done’t”
How does Banquo show loyalty and betrayal ?
Loyalty :
He stays loyal to macbeth when he tells Macbeth “I shall counselled” meaning that he does not want to act on the prophecies by killing Duncan and he wants to leave it to up to fate
Betrayal :
He also shows betrayal to Duncan because it is clear that he is suspicious of Macbeth before he murders Duncan “What, sir, not yet at rest? The kings abed” , so if he was completely loyal to Duncan and didn’t value their friendship he could have saved Duncan’s life
How does Macduff show Loyalty and betrayal ?
Loyalty :
Stays loyal to his country “yet my poor country” , O, Scotland, Scotland!”
Betrayal :
Doesn’t stay loyal to his new king Macbeth:
Doesn’t come to Macbeths coronation - “No cousin, i’ll to fife”
Kills Macbeth “ Tell you he’ll-hound” “Tryrant” and “Dead butcher” “Macduff is from his mothers womb untimely
ripped”
