lubrication Systems Flashcards
(38 cards)
What’s the purpose of a lubrication system
Distribute oil to engine bearing compartment & gearboxes
What type of lubrication system is used in modern gas turbine engines
Self contained dry sump lubrication system
How is oil recirculated
By use of pumps
When is oil filtered
Before it reaches oil nozzle to remove foreign objects
Where is the supply filter
Downstream of supply pump
Why does supply pump filter oil
to prevent blockages of oil nozzles
What does the scavenge system do
Prevents accumulation of lubricant oil in bearing compartments & gearboxes and returns it to oil tank
How many scavenge pumps per line
1
How does a vent system work
Releases air from lubrication system to atmosphere
What does the vent line do in the bearing compartment
Release sealing air to maintain airflow around seals
What shaft does vent air leave
Shaft at rear of engine
What bearing is vent air taken from to gearboxes
Air is taken from forward bearing compartment via radial drive shaft housing
How does oil monitoring work
Measures and indicates oil quantity , oil pressure and oil temp
What indicator does a mechanical clog use
Pop out
Where is a magnetic chip detector installed
In the individual scavenge lines
How does the oil quantity transmitter work
Sends info via a computer which performs the measurement
What is an EIU
Engine Interface Unit
What’s the two types of transmitters
Reed switch and capacitance
How does a low oil pressure switch work
When oil pressure goes below a limit the switch closes which sends a signal to flight warning computer
Where are oil temperature sensors found
In scavenge system
Two types of temperature sensor
Thermocouple and thermistor
How do you find out about the internal wear of lubricated engine components
Soap - spectrometric oil analysis program
What’s the smallest size particle the scavenge system can catch
0.015mm
What’s bad about the scavenge oil filter
Filter not changed often and can take a long time for inspection
