LUNGS BREATHING Flashcards
(9 cards)
Normal rate 12-20 cpm, normal rhythm
sighs 7/hr
causes; normal physiology
eupnea
Rate: >25cpm, regular rhythm
causes: diabetic coma, metabolic acidosis, brain tumor
tachypnea
absence of breathing
Causes: cardiac arrest; increased ICP
apnea
increased depth, normal rate, regular rhythm
causes: exertion, fever, pain, respiratory disease
hyperapnea
decreased depth, normal rate regular rhythm
causes: circulatory failure, meningitis, uncal herniation
hypoapnea
increasing breaths (rate and depth) then decreasing breaths followed by periods of Apnea (20-60 sec)
causes:
normal in new born and aged, CHF, Aortic valve lesion, dissecting aneurysm
cheyne strokes
Ataxic breathing
fast and deep breath with periods of apnea and no set rhythm
causes: spinal meningitis, increased ICP, CNS lesions or disease
Biot’s breathing
fast and deep breath (>20/min) like sighs with no expiratory pause
causes: diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hemorrhage, peritonitis, renal failure, uremia
Kussmaul’s respiration
long gasping inspirations with insufficient expirations
causes: lesions in the pneumotaxic center
apneustic breathing
