M11.2 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are PSEs
Principal structural elements.
A part of the ac that contributes significantly to the carrying loads.
Eg wings, pressurised areas, horizontal stabiliser.
What are primary structures
Any part of the ac that should it fail it could led to catastrophic disasters
What are secondary structures.
Encompasses all non-primary structural elements.
What does the fail safe method rely upon
Relies upon duplication of certain structural members.
What are safe life concepts
Based on a prediction of how long a component can stay in service before reaching a pint of fatigue damage.
What are damage tolerance concepts.
If damage occurs the structure can still operate without failure until the damage is found.
What are the 5 main structural units.
The fuselage
The wings
The stabilisers
Th flight control surfaces
The landing gear
What are the major ac zones
100 - lower half of fuselage
200 - upper half of fuselage
300 - empannage,vertical+horizontal stabs
400 - power plants and the struts
500 - left wing
600 - right wing
700 - landing gears and landing gear doors
800 - doors.
Identification of access panels and service doors
First 3 digits are the zone
First letter shows the position of door, forward to aft, inboard to outboard, bottom to top.
Second letter shows if it left or right.
Buttock lines
Verticle planes parallel to the centre line through fuselage.
Water lines
Horizontal planes.
Components stations
Engines have their own datum and butt lines.
Hoop stress
Pressurised aircraft only
Circumferential tensile stress
Hoop stress will be twice the value of longitudinal stress
