They are both being bullied and Machuca stands up to the bullies

The man Gonzalo’s mother is having an affair with - gives lots of gifts to Gonzalo
What is happening in Chile during the film?
a civil war/Chilean Coup - Communist v. Anti-communist
What was the point of the Coup?
to overthrow the socialist party ran by Allende - Pinochet wanted power - so he killed everyone in favor of communism
What is a form of symbolism we see?
the wall that says “No a la guerra civil” that keeps erasing
What does the erasing of the wall symbolize?
the gov trying to silence or censor the public and not giving them the right to speak their truth and mind
Who brings Gonzalo home when his mom does not show up?
Machuca’s uncle - they put him to work at a protest selling flags (they work both sides and sell both flags)
What act does Gonzalo do for Machuca?
Gonzalo knows Machuca struggles with English and does his test for him
What happens the first time Gonzalo goes to Machuca’s house?
Gonzalo is told not to leave his bike because it will get stolen

Machuca’s cousin - becomes a part of the friend group

Who is Father McEnroe
A Catholic priest, in charge of St. Pats, stands up for the rights of all people
What happens at the school?
Father McEnroe is removed from his position and replaced by a military man, the kids are forced to shave their heads if their hair is too long, the kids are being mistreated or killed for refusing to change
What happens at the next mass?
Father McEnroe comes in to eat all the hosts because the grounds are no longer sacred - the boys all stand to show him respect and say goodbye
What happens when Gonzalo goes to Machuca’s home for the last time?
The coup is happening - people are being pulled from their homes and killed, they kill Silvana, they try to get Gonzalo but realize he is rich and let him go
What is Machuca’s dad like?
he’s a drunk and abusive
