Major Body Systems Flashcards
(12 cards)
Skeletal Body System
protects and supports body organs through muscles (bones/joints)
Integumentary System
the external body covering and protecting deep tissues from injury (skin, hair, and nails)
Nervous system
fast acting control system that responds to internal and external changes (brain, nerves, spinal cord)
Muscular System
allows manipulation of the environment, locomotion, and facial expression (skeletal muscles)
Cardiovascular System
Blood vessels transports blood which carries oxygen, carbondioxide, and nutrients (heart, blood vessels)
Endocrine System
Glands secretes hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use
Respiratory System
Keeps blood constantly supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide
Lymphatic System/Immunity
Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood. The immune response attacks against foreign substances within the body
Urinary System
Eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body (kidney, urinary bladder, urethra)
Digestive System
Breaks down food into absorbable units that enter the blood for distribution to body cells. (Liver, stomach, intestines)
Male Reproductive System
Production of offspring, testes produce sperm and male sex hormone
Female Reproductive System
Production of offspring, ovaries produce eggs and female sex hormones
