Q

How much clearance does the MSA give you?

What is the difference with the MVA?

A

1,000 ft above an obstacle within 25nm radius. MVA is a clearance of 3 miles with 1,000ft clearance on obstacle and 2,000’ in mountainous areas

Q
  1. Brief ATL Runway 8L “additional runway information”
  2. What HIRL CL ALSF-II means.
  3. What do the numbered bullet points 3 & 4 mean?
  4. Why it is 8800’ when the runway pavement is 9000’
A
  1. HIRL is High Intensity Runway Lights. Starts as white and yellow halfway through the runway or 2,000 ft. Whichever is less. Spaced 200 ft apart. CL is Center Line lights. ALSF-II is Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights. ALSF-I is for Category I Runways. ALSF-II is for Category II Runways. Adds 2 red lights on the side, starting at the final 1,000ft of the lights. ALSF-1 does not have the red lights on the side.
  2. Bullet points 3 & 4: “3” is 3.0 degree glideslope angle “4” is LDA 8800’
  3. 9000’ (8L runway length) - 8800’ (LDA 8L) = 200’ is the Stop Way

Q

On the ILS Z RWY 02 into Guatemala, coming from the northwest when can you report established on the approach

A

Q

What is a MEA , and what is the navigational coverage?

A

Minimum en-route altitude. The MEA provides radio navigation coverage to 4NM either side of the airway.

Note: The answer mentioning 5NM in the exam is wrong

14
Q

What is the minimum visibility to take off from runway 26R in ATL?

A

500ft (200m) RVR but needs two working RVR. This is a Non Standard Take Off. Not Low Visibility.

Way to read, 2 Engine (Standard) then Adequate, then 2 RVR

Read Minimums from right to left. See Jeppesen chart for explanation

Q

When do VOR’s switch from magnetic to true north?

Define the Polar Region

A

When the aircraft enters the polar region it will auto switch to TRU. The pilot can also select TRU when outside the polar region.

The polar region is defined as north of 82 deg N latitude or south of 82 deg S latitude

Q

On the ILS DME-1 RWY01 into Guatamala City, how would you get down if you were high and fast, also what altitude would you climb to if you had to go around without comms?

A

Descend in the hold. Go around and climb to the highest altitude in the MSA, even if.you might be on the lower side of a sector

18
Q

On a SID where is the highest altitude, and if ATC assigned a different altitude and airspeed can you accept?

A

Yes you can accept

19
Q

What does an “R” mean by an approach frequency on a plate?

A

An (R) means that is the frequency ATC will receive on

20
Q

What do red center line lights mean when you’re landing?

When do red and amber lights appear and appear until when?

A

The red center line lights indicate the last 1,000’ of runway remaining

Red and light amber lights appear 3,000’ before the end of the runway until the red center light comes. Red and amber is 2,000’ in length

21
Q

SKBO EVRAK 5B / ZIPAQUIRA 5H (14L/R) Departure chart : Why there is a speed restriction right after takeoff turning left? (I don’t have the airport)

A

To keep the turn tight away from the mountains

22
Q

KDTW (Detroit) - BARII2 SID : What is the speed restriction above 10000ft? (I have the chart)

A

Top Right on the chart there is a red box, SPEED RESTRICTION “at or above 10000ft maintain 280kt until advised by ATC”

23
Q

KLAX 10-9 / 10-9A chart “ What is the usable length on the Runway 06R, via the Glide Slope”

A

Check chart 10-09A , look for additional RWY Information. Usable Lengths - 6R - 9367’

24
Q

What does a runway distance remaining sign look like?

A

Black sign with a white number. Number is in the the thousands of feet

25
Q

What are MORA, MOCA, OROCA

A

A minimum off-route altitude (MORA) created by Jeppesen, provides a quick way for an aircraft pilot to read the minimum altitude required for terrain and obstacle clearance. MORAs give at least 1,000 feet altitude clearance above terrain and obstacles such as radio masts, and 2,000 feet where the terrain and obstacles exceed 5,000 feet.

MINIMUM OBSTRUCTION CLEARANCE ALTITUDE (MOCA) - The lowest altitude on VOR airways which meets obstacle clearance requirements and navigational signal coverage only within 25 statute (22 nautical) miles of a VOR

OROCA. An off-route obstruction clearance altitude (OROCA) is an off-route altitude that provides obstruction clearance with a 1,000-foot buffer in non- mountainous terrain areas and a 2,000-foot buffer in designated mountainous areas within the United States.

26
Q

How to tell if an ILS course is front or back course?

A

Front course, the shaded part of the feathered arrow is on the right. Back course, the left would be shaded.

27

A

Runway End Identifier Lights

28
