Marxist Subcultural Flashcards
(3 cards)
What is the marxist subcultural perspective of crime?
Subcultures form as a result of capitalism.
Youth subcultures and the alternative styles should be seen as a challenge to class inequality and the hegemony (dominance) of middle class values in society.
Phil Cohen
Skinheads
Suggests skinheads are a reaction to working class communities, whose dress exaggerated working class masculinity and aggression.
Skinhead’s anti-immigrant stance was a reaction to the decline of their white working class neighbourhoods.
Dick Hebdige
Punk Rockers
Argued that punks see out deliberately to shock society by adopting a style to resist the hegemonic middle class cultural values, with facial piercings, tattoos, alternative clothing and hairstyles.
Capitalism commercialises some aspects of youth cultural styles, so they just become consumer items/fashion trends.
