What is meant by ‘capitalism is criminogenic?
Capitalism causes crime
Why are the Proletariat forced to commit crime?
Because capitalism creates huge inequalities e.g.someone needing to steal food because they can’t afford to eat
What do Marxists believe about how different classes are policed?
Working class are overpoliced and street crimes are focused on too much. Ruling class underpoliced and get away with crime
What do Marxists believe about white collar crime?
The Bourgeoisie commit white collar crime like embezzlement because they compete for profits. They are much more likely to get away with crime because they aren’t policed as heavily as the Proletariat
What did Chambliss say about law?
The ruling class create laws which benefit themselves
Why do Marxists believe crime statistics are socially constructed?
Crime statistics reflect police priorities rather than which crimes are actually taking place. The government influence crime statistics because they tell police what to focus on
Strengths of Marxist theory
- Recognises impact of class inequalities on crime
- Highlights issue of selective law enforcement
- Explains money motivated crimes
Weaknesses of Marxist theory
- Street crimes easier to prosecute whereas white collar crimes are complex and hidden
- Doesn’t account for violence crime
- Focuses on class ignoring other marginalised identities like race and gender
